A Landscaping Assessment and Call-to-Action to Improve Access to Novel Reserve Antibiotics in 14 Low- and Middle-Income Countries

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a significant global health issue, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). A study conducted in 14 LMICs found that top unmet needs include access to new antibiotics, affordability, and adequate safety profiles. Barriers to access include insufficient funding, shortage of infectious disease physicians, poor AMR education, and lack of restrictions. Private sector facilities have better access to Reserve products. The study identified common barriers and pathways to Reserve antibiotic access, offering insights into solutions and opportunities to strengthen access pathways. A six-step introductory pathway for novel Reserve antibiotics is described.
